It is finally here! Veeam Availability Suite v9 is released and is ready for deployment. You can upgrade your current installation as long as you are running Backup & Replication 7.0 Patch 4 through version 8.0 (any patch level) and for Veeam ONE version 7.0 & 8.0. In this post I will be upgrading my v8 installation to v9.
What’s New:
There are many new features added in v9, check out the links below to see whats new:
Download:
To download the latest version visit the Veeam website at the link below. You will need to create a Veeam account in order to download the software and receive a trial key. With Availability Suite v8 there was a single .ISO that contained both Backup & Replication and ONE. With v9 they are separate .ISO downloads.

Before you Start:
Take a snapshot of your Veeam server to ensure easy rollback if a issue occurs. If your SQL database is external ensure you have a backup of that as well.
The installed Backup & Replication application needs to be stopped. Stop the highlighted Veeam services:
Go into Task Manager and ensure the Veeam.Backup.Shell process is not running. If it is go ahead and kill it:
If Veeam.Backup.Shell is running you will get the following error and cannot proceed with the upgrade:
Upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication:
Now the services are stopped you can mount the ISO and run Setup.exe
Click Veeam Backup & Replication – Upgrade:
Click Next:
Accept the EULA to continue then click Next:
The installation should detect your v8 installation. Click Next:
If you have a trial key you can browse for it otherwise leave blank to operate in Free Edition. Click Next:
Compare Veeam Editions:
Enter the password for the user account used during initial installation. Click Next:
If it does not automatically populate the fields enter the SQL database information from the initial installation. Click Next:
Note: If your SQL DB is external ensure your SQL account has elevated permissions
You should get this pop up message saying the database will be upgraded to the new version. Click Yes:
Click Install to start the upgrade process:
Once completed click Finish:
You will get a pop up box requesting a reboot for the configuration changes to take affect. Click Yes to reboot.
When you first open the Backup and Replication Client you will get a message that wants to upgrade the Veeam server components.
Click Next:
The upgrade should take 1 minute or less, once complete click Finish:
Note: If the Component Upgrade isn’t performed your backups jobs will fail with a message saying the proxy is out of date.
Once the Component upgrade is complete your jobs should finish successfully again.
Backup & Replication is now upgraded to v9!
Upgrade Veeam ONE Server:
You do not need to stop the Veeam ONE services as it does it for you during the upgrade. Mount the .ISO and run Setup.exe

What happens to the alarms after the upgrade process? Alarm customization remains the same after upgrade?
Hi, I came across your blog when searching for VEEAM upgrade. Have you performed this in a chronological order? The reason why I ask is I am trying to upgrade VEEAM ONE and VEEAM B&R from v7 to v9.5 and as per VEEAM’s website I need to perform a 2 step upgrade.
I have upgraded v7 to v8 for both these products. Now when I am trying to upgrade v8 to v9.5 I am encountering errors. VEEAM’s website suggests that you first update VEEAM ONE and then B&R.
In your screenshots you have upgraded B&R before VEEAM ONE. Can you please confirm if you have tried the VEEAM’s suggested approach?
Regards,
Sachin
